This past week was the first week of the rest of my life: I’m now officially enrolled in coach certification training at the @LifeCoachSchool! My own coach, Dr. Katrina Ubell (@coachkatrinaubellmd), is a master certified life and weight loss coach through this very same school and has provided such insight to me about my own thinking and how I am begetting the results I have in my life that I was inspired to follow in her footsteps. I know lots about the brain and body and how we develop (and tackle) obesity from a medical perspective, and now I’m super excited to be able to learn how to tackle it from the behavioral perspective and help people with their mindset. I am so used to giving people prescriptive advice as a physician that it’s going to be quite a challenge for me to learn how to step out of advice-giver role and help people make their own inferences and decisions without judgement. Doctors are often full of “shoulds” whereas a good coach will never judge whether something should or should not be done — they simply show you your own brain and what your own thoughts are doing to create what you’ve got right now, and help you identify different ways of approaching things. You really can’t change behavior or results (like bodyweight) without first changing your thoughts and feelings.
So. As I embark upon this course of study, I will need volunteers to help me practice coaching (before I entirely know exactly what I’m doing!). My certification class includes requirements for audio-taped coaching sessions of me and one or more practice clients so that they can judge my skills and whether I’m correctly putting into practice what they’re teaching me. I’ll be putting out feelers on social media in the coming weeks once my feet are wet and ask for brave volunteers, so stay tuned for the unique opportunity to get in on the ground floor and work with me for FREE!
In the meantime, I continue my journey to achieve my own goal of reaching 135 pounds, and I’m happy to report a weight loss of 2.6 pounds after doing my quarterly #DIYFMD (DIY Fasting Mimicking Diet) this week. I tend to go up a bit over the weekend so I won’t beat myself up if by Monday I’m a little higher, but I will take this success and run with it!
